Mark Clarke began his musical journey in Liverpool, where witnessing The Beatles and various other groups at age twelve inspired him to pursue bass guitar. Local press even dubbed him "the Joe Cocker of Liverpool" during this formative period according to an article in the Liverpool Echo. Seeking broader opportunities after a year of local gigs, he relocated to London, where a connection with Clem Clempson led to an introduction to Jon Hiseman. This foundational period set the stage for decades of activity across multiple genres and bands.

The Tempest Era and Progressive Collaborations

In this group, Clarke played bass on two studio albums alongside guitarists Allan Holdsworth and Ollie Halsall, as well as vocalist Paul Williams. A live album was also issued later from these sessions. Beyond his work with Tempest, Clarke extended his musical reach by playing bass on several solo albums for Ken Hensley. These recordings showcased his versatility within the rock genre during a highly active period of his career before he shifted toward more commercial ventures in subsequent years.

Commercial Ventures and Extensive Touring

He also had a short tenure with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, though he did not appear on any official recordings for that group. Additionally, he worked twice with Mountain during separate periods in the mid-eighties and mid-nineties, as well as contributing to albums by Ian Hunter and Torque.

Legacy Reunions and Later Projects

The latter part of Clarke's career was defined by significant reunions with former colleagues. Later, in 2017, Clarke joined forces with Jon Hiseman and Clem Clempson for a new trio named JCM. They recorded an album titled Heroes, released in April 2018. Although a European tour began that month, it concluded early due to Hiseman's illness; he passed away in June 2018.
